Principal's Message

Dear Students, Parents and Guardians:
This program book contains information regarding the diploma requirements for the
Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) and the course offerings for grades 9 to 12 at Georgetown District High School. In planning your program it is important to review the contents of this book carefully and to consult with teachers and guidance counselors. Marks, achievement levels and teacher comments from courses previously completed are good indicators of future success. Advice from current teachers and subject heads of departments can also prove invaluable in making course selection  decisions. The focus of the grades 9 and 10 programs is to provide students with a wide
variety of experiences in many subject areas as well as to build basic knowledge and skills leading to grade 11. The program offerings beginning in grade 11 and finishing in grade 12 are "destination" based and as such, establish pathways that lead students to the workplace, apprenticeships, colleges or universities.

In making course choices, take into consideration the following:

Student destination after high school - are you planning to enter the workforce directly after high school, attend college or university, or enter into post-secondary skills training programs or apprenticeship?

Student career goals
Student interests and aptitudes

Student motivation and willingness to put forth the effort necessary to successfully meet program requirements

Students in grades 9 and 10 are required to select a full load of 8 courses per school year. In grade 11 a minimum of 7 courses are to be selected, however we strongly recommend that students in the third year of a four year diploma take 8 courses. This would then require a student to take 6 courses in their final year of high school in order to achieve the OSSD

We believe that this would then allow the student to concentrate on a fewer number of courses which potentially act as prerequisites for destinations such as college and university. It would also allow the student to take additional courses beyond diploma requirements in instances where a greater challenge would be beneficial to the student. Students entering grade 11 should also be aware that Ministry of Education regulations require that all courses taken beyond mid-semester at the senior level are to appear on the student's
Ontario Student Transcript (OST) regardless of whether a passing or failing grade was achieved.

This includes students withdrawing from senior courses as well. It is referred to as "full disclosure". It is very important that students and parents select courses at the senior level carefully as there is no guarantee that a change in courses can be accommodated once the course selection process has been completed and the school year has begun. Georgetown District High School prides itself on having a broad range of courses and programs enabling students to pursue a wide range of personal interests and career goals. The future is yours! Plan for it carefully!
