THE
GDHS STORY
Currently
in our 122th year, our present student and staff of
over 1600 believe in a high degree of commitment to both
school and community. We value an educational environment where
all who are willing can learn and achieve excellence, both
academically and co-curricularly. We demonstrate caring and
commitment as citizens not only to our school but
also in our involvement in the Georgetown community as a whole.
GDHS
has a wide variety of programs and courses available to its students. These
programs prepare students for university, colleges, apprenticeships or
other forms of post-secondary training. GDHS is an International
Baccalaureate school. Our first set of students wrote their
exams in May with great success! We have a demonstrated record of
achieving excellence in the field of Academics, Technology and
the Arts and also place a strong emphasis on school-to-work
transition programs for students wishing to choose this career
path.
We are the
“Home of the Rebels”
and have a strong tradition in the area of school athletics.
GDHS has achieved district, regional and provincial awards in
many sports, such as volleyball, swimming, basketball, hockey
and wrestling to name a few.
The history
of GDHS is integral to history of the Georgetown.
PRINCIPAL'S
REPORT
Now that I have had five months to settle into Georgetown, I am
beginning to feel like a Rebel. The community feel of this school
is not something I have experienced quite so intensely before.
This school is very much a pillar of this town and it continues
to produce students who are not only influential in Georgetown,
but well beyond. This truly is a community with heart and GDHS
both reflects and promotes those values that the community holds
so dearly.
This past
year, GDHS sports teams won 14 Halton Championships.
This surely must be some kind of record. Our Sears Drama group
advanced in that competition, and our Arts department sent over
140 students to New York City. Our school prom went off without
a hitch. There are countless examples of GDHS supremacy, so suffice
to say, it is a great school with great students and a superb
staff.
Next year
looks to be even more exciting (and busy) as the renovation
plans move into full swing. These plans coupled with
the Field of Dreams group (who are working to bring a new
turf field and track to GDHS) will keep us all hopping.
However, there are activities we are looking forward to, as we
know they will both make an already great school even better.
Finally,
I would like to wish Mr. Boychuk, Mr. Redshaw, and Mr.
Moore a long and happy retirement. These three men have
made a real difference in the lives of literally thousands of
students. They have worked on behalf of the students at GDHS and
helped them to achieve success, not only while they attended here,
but also after they left. All three of them deserve our best wishes.

STUDENT EXCELENCE
Experiencing
Science
The GDHS Science Department is very excited to be part of a high
tech pilot project for the Board involving hand-held
LabQuest portable data collection units. Our Grade 9
students had the pleasure of viewing the Cosmic Connections presentation
by Mr. Brian Cheaney. Students participated in astronomy workshops
during the day, and in the evening, they attended an evening Star
Party with members of the G.D.H.S. Space and Astronomy Club. The
indoor presentation involved a spectacular tour of the night sky
and a history of astronomy. Grade
10 students participated in the E.Y.E.S. program. We
would like to thank Ian Barrett and his team at P.O.W.E.R. for
educating our students regarding the role they can play in improving
our local environment. The program also provides for actual fieldwork
. Our students went exploring beyond the classroom
with Physics Day at Wonderland, they explored weather science
at the Weather Network, and they went to the ROM to view, “Darwin,
The Evolution Revolution.” Grade 10 and 11 students have
been invited to participate in a biodiversity science expedition
to Peru in March of 2009.
Swimming
Excellence
Swimtastic is a great way of describing this year’s results
for the Rebel swim team. For the ninth year in a row the Rebel
swimmers won the Halton Championship title, and qualified 32 swimmers
to the OFSAA championship in Etobicoke. In Etobicoke the Rebels
continued their winning ways. Out of 285 teams, the Rebels took
home 16
individual and relay medals (more than any other team), placed
second overall in province, second in the Girls category, and
an amazing first in the Boys division with the highest every score
in the history of OFSAA swimming.
Music
Excellence
This past year, the Senior Jazz band was recently honoured to
receive the HDSB Award of Excellence. This ensemble was recognized
for earning GOLD at the Finals of Musicfest Canada. Invitations
to Musicfest finals are awarded at qualifying regional festivals.
Our Senior Jazz group has captured gold at Musicfest nationals
for four years in a row!
Technically
Brilliant
GDHS students competed in the Halton Skills Competition in April
in the following events: carpentry, cabinet making, automotive
technician, small power equipment, hairstyling, architectural
CADD and desktop publishing. Our students were successful in winning
four bronze medals. Students from Ms. Leonard`s Grade 12 Architecture
Design class competed in the Hamilton Home Builders Association
Competition in May. Students were required to submit a set of
Custom Home Working Drawings for a family home. Mrs. Dileo
and two of her apprentices will be walking in
the Weekend to End Breast Cancer this September.
Last year, with generous donations from staff and students at
GDHS, Mrs. Dileo raised over $2000.00 to help find a cure!
